Project Overview

Koraenui Solar Farm is a 40 MWp renewable energy development located on Whales Line, Marton, in the Rangitīkei District, on New Zealand’s North Island. Once operational, the solar farm will produce approximately 46 GWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power up to 5,700 homes each year.

This project supports New Zealand’s transition to a low-carbon energy system by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

About us

Koraenui Solar Farm is being developed by Aquila Clean Energy New Zealand, part of Aquila Group. We bring global expertise in renewable energy development, construction, and operations, with projects across New Zealand, Australia and Asia-Pacific.


Aquila will lead the Koraenui Solar Farm construction with an EPC contractor and then own and operate the solar farm, ensuring accountability throughout the project lifecycle.

Upcoming engagement

Due to inclement weather, the Marton Harvest Festival scheduled for 12 April 2026 has been cancelled. As a result, the planned Koraenui Solar Farm project information stand will no longer proceed at the festival.

We are currently exploring opportunities to hold another community engagement event later this year. Further details will be shared once available, so please watch this space.

As the project moves toward pre-construction in 2026, we will:

  • Inform the community on the solar farm’s final design, construction schedules and mitigation measures.
  • Arrange a ‘Meet the Contractor’ opportunity to introduce the projects EPC construction partner to nearby neighbours
  • Provide ongoing updates via the project website, newsletters, and targeted engagement with the community and nearby neighbours

Our engagement with Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki – Ngāti Apa follows tikanga, and we will work with them to include appropriate protocols such as karakia at key project milestones and opportunities for collaboration.

Project Overview

What is this project and where will it be located?

The Koraenui Solar Farm is a 40MW renewable energy project located at Whales Line, just north of Marton in the Rangitīkei District, North Island, New Zealand. The 38-hectare site will host fixed-tilt, north-facing solar panels to generate clean electricity for New Zealand homes and businesses.

The project is being developed by Aquila Clean Energy APAC, part of the Aquila Group.

The project has secured all required resource consents and is in the late stages of development. Environmental assessments and engagement with mana whenua, neighbours, and local councils have either commenced or will start prior to pre-construction in 2026.

The site was selected after a district-wide search based on:

  • Proximity to Powerco’s 33 kV electricity network
  • Flat topography for efficient solar installation
  • Low visual impact and minimal neighbouring properties
  • Compatibility with existing rural land use
  • Limited need for vegetation clearance

Approximately 76,384 panels will be installed across 1,461 arrays, each with a maximum height of 2.25m.

  • Early 2026: Pre-construction works
  • Early 2027: Major construction begins
  • Late 2027: Commissioning and connection to the grid
  • 2028 onwards: Operations commence

Resource consents have been granted by Rangitīkei District Council (2024) and Horizons Regional Council (2024). Both were processed on a non-notified basis.

Energy Generation & Grid Connection

Up to 46 GWh of renewable electricity each year.

Enough to meet the average daily demand of approximately 14,000 homes or supply the annual energy needs of around 5,700 homes.

The solar farm will connect directly into Powerco’s 33 kV network via a dedicated connection point on Whales Line.

Environmental Considerations

Specialist studies cover ecology, noise, visual impacts, stormwater, and cultural heritage.

The site is modified pasture with low ecological value. Trees will be planted along the permitter to provide screening and support biodiversity.

Operational noise will be minimal and within consent limits. Trees will be planted around the perimeter to screen the solar farm.

A fully operational stormwater management system will be in place before commissioning to maintain existing flow rates, velocity, and direction.

Construction and operations of the Koraenui Solar Farm will follow best-practice erosion and sediment controls and adhere to conditions outlined in the project’s Resource Consent.

Health, Safety & Decommissioning

All electrical infrastructure for the solar panels will be secured on site.
The site will be managed in accordance with strict health and safety procedures, and access will be restricted to authorised personnel.
The solar farm will be decommissioned as per a decommission plan, with equipment removed and materials recycled where possible.
Yes. The land can be returned to agricultural use or another agreed condition after decommissioning.

Jobs

Yes. Through the project’s EPC contractor, there will be 20-150 jobs across the project’s construction phases. There will be up to two ongoing roles through the operation and management for the life of the project.

We will hold a project information session in 2026 for suppliers to register their interest with the project’s construction partner.

Consents & Compliance

Yes. Resource consents were granted by Rangitīkei District Council (Feb 2024) and Horizons Regional Council (Jun 2024).
The project will be monitored to ensure compliance with all consent conditions, with reports provided to the relevant councils.
A complaints register will be maintained during construction and operations. All complaints will be acknowledged, investigated, and responded to promptly.

Project Impacts

There is no evidence to suggest that well-managed renewable energy projects negatively affect property values.
The low-profile panels will be screened by vegetation screening to reduce visibility from public roads and nearby residences.

All construction vehicles will access the site from Whales Line only. No site access from Pukepapa Road.

● Construction: Managed within consented limits and restricted to approved hours.
● Operation: Daytime 50 dB LAeq; Night-time 45 dB LAeq and 70 dB LAFmax.

Glint and glare will be managed by vegetation screening around the project perimeter.

Some temporary noise and dust may occur. Dust will be managed through water carts and surface stabilisation.
Monday–Saturday, 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. No work on Sundays or public holidays.
